The BMW Artwork Car or truck is back, or fairly Artwork Cars and trucks plural, since BMW will finally make its prolonged-standing artwork venture a generation design as an alternative of a 1-off. Granted, this most up-to-date Art Automobile will see a constrained operate of only 99 motor vehicles, but that is even now a lot more than in yrs past. My hope is that anyone will scoop a single of these up and daily travel it, perhaps even refill its blinker fluid routinely. One can desire.

BMW requested American artist Jeff Koons to structure its Art Auto once more, and this is the 20th in the collection. BMW calls it the 8 X JEFF KOONS, which is just a caps lock way of indicating Koons exercised his strange proclivities on a BMW M850i xDrive Gran Coupé. I just cannot explain to you how joyful I am that a sedan is finding the love it deserves, BMW’s naming conventions be damned.

I’m mainly pleased that we’ll no for a longer time have to use artificial fact to faux we have an art car, but could possess and drive just one! A number of of us, at least. BMW did not announce any pricing, but the initially a single will be auctioned at Christie’s in New York in April.

I’m not positive I’m in appreciate with the layout, but the carmaker spelled out some of the thoughts that went into Koon’s next Artwork Automobile:

The layout incorporates elements from Pop Artwork as nicely as geometric styles that mix properly with the lines and contours of the BMW 8 Sequence Gran Coupé. The exploding traces of shade at the rear are reminiscent of Koons’ BMW Art Automobile from 2010. Koons built the 17th BMW Art Car, the BMW M3 GT2, which competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In accordance to Koons, the phrases “POP!” painted on both of those sides and the swirls of wind symbolize the energy and speed of THE 8 X JEFF KOONS.

The blue coloration scheme is guide-ended by yellow front and rear bumpers, and without these I’m not guaranteed the 8 X JEFF KOONS would have a putting structure. BMW states that Koons wanted a minimalist and conceptual motor vehicle. Good ample.

I like it far more than the preceding Art Automobile (#19) from John Baldessari, a white selfie-sporting 2016 BMW M6 GTLM. Funny plenty of, I’ll say that my preferred Artwork Car or truck (#17) is yet another that traces back to Koons, the 2010 BMW M3 GT2. That a person ran at Le Mans, and it designed even land speeds seem like light-weight speed.

Koon’s newest style and design leaves me seeking a lot more mainly because pop artwork features and a “swirl of wind” from an aero vent is not my strategy of avant-garde. But I admit the unique colored bumpers search great. It does not seem to be like a massive ask to start off undertaking accent bumpers. We get two-tone roofs. Why not two-tone bumpers, way too?

BMW claims that its Landshut plant will paint all the plastic outer panels, and that about 100 workforce are concerned in the painstaking method. The get the job done is so meticulous, BMW statements that only two cars can be painted for every week.
