2022 Honda Odyssey vs. 2022 Toyota Sienna Comparison

The Honda Odyssey vs. Toyota Sienna rivalry is legendary within the minivan segment. Still, both vans face stiff competition from class rivals and the 3-row SUVs that many consumers now purchase instead.

In response, Honda has doubled down on its classic formula. The 2022 Honda Odyssey has a vigorous V6 engine, and with its composed ride and precise steering, Honda’s minivan is a delight to drive. Interior space is vast for people and cargo, and the Odyssey’s second-row seats still adjust fore-and-aft and side to side.

Toyota, meanwhile, has changed things up a bit. The 2022 Toyota Sienna has a standard hybrid powertrain, which mutes performance but pumps up fuel economy. In addition, you can get all-wheel drive (AWD) on any Sienna. Inside, Toyota’s minivan gives up some cargo capacity but compensates with downright luxurious seating.

Which approach is better? It all depends on your priorities. This 2022 Honda Odyssey vs. 2022 Toyota Sienna comparison will help you sort out the details.

Price and Value

2022 Honda Odyssey

Consumers shopping for a 2022 Honda Odyssey minivan will find that it comes in LX, EX, EX-L, Touring, and Elite trim levels. All Odysseys have a conventional V6 engine and are front-wheel drive (FWD). Eight-passenger seating is standard on all but the base LX trim. The Odyssey LX has an open center aisle between its second-row chairs and can accommodate seven passengers.

Pricing on the 2022 Odyssey ranges from $32,290 to $48,020, not including the $1,225 destination charge.

Honda offers connected services via HondaLink, but services are few unless you select an Odyssey Touring or Elite. Both provide a one-year trial subscription to HondaLink Security, including automatic collision notification, live emergency assistance, and rapid access to roadside assistance. The Touring and Elite also come with a 3-month subscription for remote access features (door locking, engine starting), geofencing for less trusted drivers, stolen-vehicle location services, a parking-lot finder feature, and live concierge services. These trim levels include a Wi-Fi hotspot, and the trial subscription lasts three months.

Honda doesn’t offer complimentary scheduled maintenance for the Odyssey. But Honda’s minivan holds its value well. The Odyssey is the top-ranked minivan in the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. ALG Residual Value Awards.

Consumers shopping for a 2022 Toyota Sienna minivan will find that it comes in LE, XLE, XSE, Woodland Edition, Limited, and Platinum trim levels. A 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain is standard. Front-wheel drive is standard on all Siennas, except the new-for-2022 Toyota Sienna Woodland Edition trim level. The Woodland Edition has standard AWD and a slightly taller ride height. All-wheel drive is optional on other trims.

Like the Odyssey, the 2022 Sienna seats seven or eight. The LE and XLE trims have a standard 8-passenger configuration with a removable center seat between the fore-and-aft adjustable second-row bucket seats. A 7-passenger configuration with more deluxe second-row captain’s chairs is optional on the XLE and standard on higher trims.

Pricing on the 2022 Toyota Sienna ranges from $34,560 to $50,000, not including a $1,215 destination charge.

Connected services are easier to get on the 2022 Toyota Sienna. All trims provide one year of Safety Connect, including automatic collision notification, live emergency assistance, rapid access to roadside assistance, and stolen-vehicle location. You also get a 3-month trial for the Wi-Fi hotspot. Starting on the XLE, you get one year of remote locking and engine starting (Remote Connect), while the XSE and higher trims come with one year of concierge services (Destination Assist).

You’ll enjoy free scheduled maintenance for the first two years or 25,000 miles that you own a 2022 Toyota Sienna.

The Honda Odyssey does not rank among the top three Minivans in the J.D. Power 2021 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), but it ranks second in the J.D. Power 2021 Initial Quality Study (IQS). The 2022 Honda Odyssey comes with the following warranty and roadside assistance coverage:

  • Standard warranty: 3 years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty: 5 years or 60,000 miles
  • Roadside assistance: 3 years or 36,000 miles

The Toyota Sienna is the highest-ranked Minivan in the 2021 VDS, and it ranks third among Minivans in the 2021 IQS. The 2022 Toyota Sienna comes with the following warranty and roadside assistance coverage:

  • Standard warranty: 3 years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty: 5 years or 60,000 miles
  • Hybrid system warranty: 8 years or 100,000 miles

Performance and Efficiency

2022 Honda Odyssey

Every 2022 Honda Odyssey comes with a smooth and capable 3.5-liter V6 engine rated at 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission drives the front wheels. A properly equipped Odyssey has a 3,500-pound tow rating.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the 2022 Odyssey at 22 mpg in combined city and highway driving.

Meanwhile, the 2022 Toyota Sienna is now an exclusively hybrid minivan. All 2022 Siennas use a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 189 hp and 176 pound-feet of torque. This engine teams with a front electric-drive motor rated at 180 hp and 199 pound-feet of torque. If you select an AWD Toyota Sienna, your minivan will also have a rear electric-drive motor rated at 54 hp and 89 pound-feet.

In total, the 2022 Toyota Sienna makes 245 hp. An electric continuously variable transmission (eCVT) blends the power sources to deliver torque to the Sienna’s front wheels. On AWD Siennas, the rear electric motor independently drives the van’s rear wheels; there is no conventional driveshaft connecting the front and rear axles.

Performance is adequate for everyday driving, and what the hybrid Sienna lacks in vigor, it makes up for with its low fuel consumption. The EPA rates FWD 2022 Toyota Siennas at 36 mpg in combined city and highway driving. All-wheel-drive Siennas rate 35 mpg.

Impressively, the 2022 Toyota Sienna also has a 3,500-pound tow rating when properly equipped.

Advantage: Neither

Honda wins for performance, but Toyota delivers big with mpg.

Safety and Driving Assistance

Safety is usually top of mind for a family vehicle purchase, and in most cases, Honda and Toyota have you covered.

The 2022 Honda Odyssey has a standard menu of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) known as Honda Sensing. It includes a forward-collision warning (FCW) system with automatic emergency braking (AEB) and pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning (LDW), and lane-keeping assistance (or LKA, though Honda calls it Road Departure Mitigation).

You also get standard Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assistance in the form of a traffic jam assist (TJA) system that integrates adaptive cruise control (ACC) with stop-and-go capability, lane-centering assistance (which Honda calls Lane Keeping Assist), and traffic sign recognition.

The base Odyssey LX lacks a blind-spot warning (BSW) system with rear cross-traffic alert, but all other 2022 Honda Odysseys have this important safety technology. A rear-seat reminder system is standard on all 2022 Odysseys.

The 2022 Honda Odyssey earned a top 5-star overall rating in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash testing. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the structurally similar 2021 Odyssey a Top Safety Pick+, which is the Institute’s highest safety rating.

All 2022 Toyota Siennas have a Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 (TSS 2.0) package of ADAS. The Sienna’s TSS 2.0 includes FCW with AEB and pedestrian and cyclist detection, LDW, LKA, and BSW with rear cross-traffic warning. You also get Level 2 semi-autonomous assistance via the TJA system that integrates ACC with stop-and-go capability, lane centering (which Toyota calls Lane Tracing Assist), and traffic sign recognition.

Save for the base LE trim, all 2022 Siennas have low-speed front and rear automatic braking to minimize parking mishaps. Every Sienna comes with a rear-seat reminder system.

The 2022 Toyota Sienna also has a 5-star overall NHTSA safety rating. Like the Odyssey, the IIHS also named the 2021 Sienna a Top Safety Pick+.

Advantage: Toyota Sienna

Infotainment and Technology

2022 Honda Odyssey

If you select the LX version of the 2022 Honda Odyssey, your minivan will have a basic 5-inch LCD audio screen with Bluetooth but no smartphone integration. All other Honda Odysseys have a proper infotainment interface with an 8-inch touchscreen display and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Depending on the trim level, the Odyssey has anywhere from 1 to 6 USB ports.

The Honda Odyssey Touring and Elite come with factory navigation, the CabinTalk in-vehicle public-address system, the CabinWatch rear-seat monitor, and a rear entertainment system with dual 10.2-inch screens, an HDMI port, and a Blu-ray player. These trims also have a front-seat 115-volt outlet (150 watts).

All 2022 Toyota Siennas come with a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment display with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Factory navigation is standard or optional, depending on the trim level. Every 2022 Sienna has 7 USB ports. Toyota’s Driver Easy Speak public-address system is standard on all trims, except the LE.

An available entertainment package provides a single 11.6-inch rear display and an HDMI input. Optional on the Sienna Limited and Platinum trims is a digital rearview mirror that uses a camera to provide a wide-angle view of what’s behind you. A pair of 120-volt outlets (1,500 watts) is optional on most Siennas and standard on the Sienna Woodland Edition.

Advantage: Toyota Sienna

Comfort and Utility

2022 Toyota Sienna XLE AWD

Both minivans look crisp and modern on the inside and feel appropriately luxurious if you spring for one of the top trim levels. Getting in and out of the first- and second-row seats is a breeze, and you’ll find an abundance of helpful storage slots and bins. There are also thoughtful touches like the Odyssey’s floor mats, which are patterned to camouflage dirt, and the 7-passenger Sienna’s second-row captain’s chairs, which offer an incredible 25 inches of fore and aft travel.

All 2022 Honda Odysseys except the LX have a Magic Slide feature for the second-row seats. Parents wanting to install three car seats across can take advantage of Wide Mode, which allows you to slide the outboard seats laterally toward the doors while the center seat stays put. With the center seat removed, Super Mode allows you to push the outboard seats together to ease third-row access on the driver or passenger side. Without Super Mode, access to the Honda Odyssey’s rearmost seats is tighter than the Toyota Sienna.

Power-sliding rear doors are standard on all trim levels, but Honda doesn’t offer a hands-free feature. The liftgate is power-operated on the EX-L trim and up; the Honda Odyssey Elite has a hands-free liftgate.

Cargo capacity in the 2022 Honda Odyssey is generous, even by minivan standards. Honda’s minivan offers 32.8 cubic feet of volume behind the third row, 88.8 cubic feet behind the second-row seats, and a maximum capacity of 144.9 cubic feet.

The 2022 Toyota Sienna offers superb seat comfort regardless of whether you choose the 7- or 8-passenger seating configuration. In addition to generous second-row fore/aft travel, 7-passenger Siennas have fold-out ottomans on the upper trim levels.

All 2022 Toyota Siennas except the LE come with hands-free, power-sliding rear doors, and the door openings are exceptionally wide to ease third-row access. A power liftgate is also standard on these trims, and a hands-free liftgate is optional.

Cargo volume in the 2022 Toyota Sienna falls short of the 2022 Honda Odyssey, but it’s still far more space than you’ll find in most 3-row midsize SUVs. The Sienna offers 33.5 cubic feet of space behind the third row, 75.2 cubic feet behind the second-row seats, and a maximum capacity of 101.0 cubic feet.

Advantage: Neither

The Sienna wins for passenger comfort, while the Odyssey has the edge in cargo capacity.
